Woodshop & Mill to Serve Western Sonoma County
Our woodshop and mill is setting up shop in western Sonoma County at Green Valley Farm + Mill, a multi-faceted land project with commercial zoning, infrastructure, and 85-acres of mixed evergreen forest.
The establishment of Forestree Collective at Green Valley means the revitalization of this historic mill site that was operational until 2005. With target wood specifications of 6” - 12” DBH for local hard and softwoods, we’re setting our sights on trees removed for thinning and fuel load reduction projects that are traditionally bound for a chipper, burned or left in place. Utilizing this wood after ecological restoration is taken into consideration removes surface fuels and reduces the amount of carbon released into the atmosphere by giving this wood a longer lifespan as sustainable home goods.
The woodshop plans to utilize robotic technology to increase efficiency of working with small diameter considered “low to no value” in the timber industry. It is also specialized to work with small DBH logs up to 12”. We are grateful for the grant we received from the US Forest Service to research supply chain logistics for the mill.
In addition to bringing small diameter milling to the area, Forestree co-owners have been working alongside Green Valley Farm + Mill and Fire Forward since 2020 on the implementation of consecutive phases of forest management, prescribed burning and fuel load reduction in Green Valley’s forest. By learning and practicing ecological forest restoration, we strive to support these efforts in the forest at Green Valley and throughout Sonoma County.
